Karen E. Wolfram attended college at the University of Southern Maine and then Northeastern University in Boston, MA where she received a Bachelor of Science, in Criminal Justice, cum laude, in 1995. While attending college at Northeastern University she worked as well as, interned at the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services and as a private investigator. In 1997, Karen moved to California to pursue a law degree. In 2000, she received her Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law in San Diego, CA where she was honored as a member of the Pro Bono Honor Society, received the Academic Achievement Award in Juvenile Justice, was the repeated recipient of an Academic Scholarship and awarded the Alec L. Corey Scholarship Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service. While attending law school, Karen clerked with Alternative Juvenile Public Defenders Office; the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic; the insurance defense firm Silva, Clasen and Raffalow and acted as a mediator for small claims cases and disputes arising among detainees of Juvenile Hall.
Prior to joining the firm, Karen began her practice of law in California. She practiced criminal defense, family law and child protection with the Alternative Public Defenders Office, John A. Barker and Associates, in Fresno, CA. Her responsibilities included representing indigent felony criminal defendants, representing both parents and children in all stages of Child Protective proceedings, and representing clients in child support hearings and general civil legal matters. For over a year, Karen was in court in front of a judge representing clients on a daily basis. In December 2001, Karen was the recipient of John Barker and Associates “Rookie Attorney of the Year” award for outstanding service. In Spring of 2002, while still practicing law in California, Karen took and passed the Maine State Bar Exam. By September 2002, Karen had moved back to New England and began practicing law in Maine at the Law Office of Kevin Heffernan in Portland, ME. She continued to represent indigent criminal defendants, both juveniles and adults, in all stages of criminal prosecution. She also continued representing clients in Child Protective proceeding as well as, family law matters. She was once again in court advocating for her clients on a regular basis.
Since joining the firm in December 2003, Karen continues to practice criminal defense in both the federal and state courts, and represents clients in the civil arena at all stages of litigation in matters arising from civil rights violations, discrimination in the workplace, defamation, fraud, negligence, breaches of contracts, medical malpractice, and product defects.
Karen is a member of the bar of Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the California bar, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States District Court for the District of Maine. She is also a member of several professional organization, including the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and The National Trial Lawyers Association?
